Fed: Treasury says reform agenda needs to continue in Aust

The Treasury says the federal government needs to push ahead with economic reform to
support strong growth and low inflation.

In the spring economic roundup released today, Treasury says significant domestic reforms
have helped lift the medium-term potential for growth in the Australian economy.

But it says the reform agenda needs to continue in order to maintain strong growth,
push unemployment towards its lowest rate in 25 years and raise living standards.

Treasury says the economy grew by 4.3 per cent in 1999-00, with 13 consecutive quarters
of growth to the June quarter 2000.

It says employment increased by 2.7 per cent in 1999-2000, with the unemployment rate
averaging 6.9 per cent for the year.
